Abstract:

Secure communications are perhaps one of the fundamental building blocks in cyber-security efforts against cyber-attacks. Traditionally, security in communications was introduced by means of codification. In intra-data center links, the usage of codes through ciphers is widely employed, and while they add latency and increase the power, acceleration processes are now being introduced to alleviate their penalty. Alternatively, coding can be done directly to the optical signal: optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) is a physical layer technology natively supporting (de)codification of optical signals on-the-fly; thanks to new advances in photonic integrated circuits (PIC), OCDM can be effectively introduced in intra-data centers links. In this paper, we introduce the concept of optical encoders and decoders based on PIC technology to implement OCDM channels.
