Abstract:

Industrial communication requires the seamless interworking of network, computing and automation elements to ensure scalability, stability, reliability and real-time behaviour. It has to support a broad range of use cases which are related to the internal network of a production site (e.g. adding wireless sensors) as well as to extensions to public networks (e.g. remote monitoring) — of course fulfilling the necessary cyber security requirements. In this paper we present a new approach which is based on a modular communication system which takes into account the integration of heterogeneous innovative technologies into a holistic industrial ICT. It comprises of secure links to machines, sensors and mobile objects with low latency, cloud infrastructure and automated distribution of intelligence and resources. Quality of service support for the reliable connection of sites via public networks is considered as well. This work is supported by the Federal Ministry of Economy of Germany and a first outlook to the underlying concepts is presented.
