Abstract:
Open-source geospatial technologies have emerged as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for environmental monitoring and conservation. However, their successful integration necessitates the development of appropriate workflows, protocols, and data standards to ensure interoperability and data sharing across diverse platforms and systems. This paper investigates the benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with integrating open-source geospatial technologies for environmental monitoring and conservation within the context of ecological corridor conservation in the European Union. Through a comprehensive analysis of the SaveGREEN Project and the CCIBIS Geoportal, this study demonstrates how the integration of open-source geospatial technologies can enhance ecological corridor conservation in the EU. Furthermore, this paper provides an extensive review of existing research on the integration of open-source geospatial technologies for environmental monitoring and conservation, thus contributing to the growing body of knowledge in this domain.
