Abstract:
The field of Data Science is experiencing rapid growth and presents numerous opportunities and applications. However, a significant gender disparity remains in female's representation within the field, particularly in participation and leadership roles. This study explores the challenges hindering girl's entry into Data Science and STEM fields in Asia. Based on surveys and research, it is evident that there is only a small number professionals in data science-related fields are female. The negative perception and lack of a compelling vision of data science's impact contribute to this disparity. The paper presents a trans-disciplinary project initiated by researchers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and India to develop interest in data science and STEM among young female students. The project used Personas and Diagnostic Map as investigative tools to identify challenges faced by girls in joining STEM programs. The results revealed barriers such as financial constraints, lack of information, and parental hesitations. However, participants displayed determination to overcome obstacles. The study calls for targeted interventions, including mentorship programs, financial support, and confidence-building initiatives, to foster a more inclusive environment and empower young girls in pursuing STEM education. The study also suggests presentation of disintegrated data based on ethnicity and rural and urban settings to elucidate underlying trends and patterns of female's participation in STEM education. By understanding the aspirations and challenges of these individuals, collaborative efforts can be made to bridge the gender gap and unlock their full potential, fostering a diverse and innovative future in data science and STEM fields.
