Abstract:
Micro hydro power plants (MHPPs) based microgrids (MG) which usually use squirrel cage induction generators have been studied in the past decade, but the majority of the control solutions are for autonomous operation. Thus, more studies should be dedicated to the grid connection of such particular microgrids. The present paper tackles this aspect by proposing a simple control structure that can provide a smooth transfer from islanded to grid connected mode and vice versa. It relies on adding to the control structure for autonomous operation (which implies the use of a voltage source converter -VSI) of an angle analyzer block that ensures phase cancelling between the MG and grid voltages, and, to minimize the power circulation between the VSI and the grid of an extra adaptation block for the VSI currents. Simulations are performed to yield the effectiveness of the proposed control structure.
