Abstract:
The use of renewable sources of energy to charge electric vehicle (EV) batteries have drawn tremendous interest at present. The need for charging of EVs at convenient locations such as residential areas and semi commercial locations such as office parking lots and shopping malls have generated great interest in the use of solar energy for charging of the EV batteries where there is space restrictions and the need to reduce the dependency on the grid while charging, which shifts the focus towards DC charging infrastructures. Among some of the feature requirements, high power density and efficiency are important requirements. In this paper, the traditional Z source inverter(ZSI) has been modified and modeled to design a single stage DC charging converter. It uses both solar power generated from the PV array and single phase AC grid power to supply a constant charging power for the EV battery. The component sizing and the modeled topology has been shown and simulated results presented.
