Abstract:
The vision of smart grid shares goals with that of smart modern buildings, including better automation through improved observation using intelligent submetering. Electrical submetering of modern buildings can lead to energy savings and better awareness to the end-user regarding their energy consumption pattern. It can also help in getting information regarding the quality of power and expedite the automation of energy management. This paper presents a novel configuration of electrical submeter which can facilitate the implementation of smartness not as an end product, but as a quality that can evolve without changes in the physical aspects of the submeter. The submeter is inclusive of an inexpensive and small single-board computer, which can then install or change the digital application associated with submetering. When newer or advanced data-analytics are designed, the proposed submeter can be repurposed to carry out the new computations and the upgrade can be done through remote access mechanisms. This strategy can be useful for cost reduction in the ever-changing domain of smart techniques and the need for customization.
