Abstract:

This paper presents an application of the re-use concept. It includes the local use of PC Power Supply Unit (PSU) as a charge controller in a small solar PV system. The final aim is small village electrification in islanded mode in developing countries. The review of the previous work of the modification of PSU structures is first presented and compared to our solution which involves very limited modifications on the recycled electronic devices. Finally, an analysis of the environmental impacts is achieved thanks to the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) method. The results of our method are compared to those of the standard solution, in order to evaluate its feasibility. Finally, generalization issues are addressed.
