Abstract:

The paper presents an applied methodology and the obtained results for numerical optimization and design study of a guyed mast structure intended for supporting a 3 kW small wind turbine concept. Optimization of the mast topology is performed in respect to the calculated mass of the construction as well as estimated energy production in a given period. The described optimizing procedure is based on genetic algorithms which together with computing environment based on the Finite Element Method, coupled aero- servo- elastic- numerical simulations and pre/post-processor scripts lead to the optimal solution. Subsequently, the design study is performed to implement the obtained topology into a set of specific design solutions. The main assumption during the design stage is to minimize manufacturing and installation costs. Optimization of the mast allows for cost reduction and, hence, popularization of small wind turbines, which could have a significant and positive impact on global eco-energy production.
