Abstract:

This paper presents the experimental investigation of a variable flux motor (VFM) with a built-in mechanism to adjust the position of the rotor relative to the stator. The motor is designed to maintain a fixed output shaft even when the rotor is mechanically displaced. The rotor shifting mechanism is designed to vary the air-gap flux of the motor with minimal moving parts. The motor is experimentally tested for its performance in a series of tests to determine the voltage constants and efficiency of the motor under various operating conditions. The results show that the voltage constant of the motor decreases by up to 60% when the rotor is fully extended. The experimental results show that the top speed of the VFM can be extended by up to 230% while still maintaining the same level of power output at efficiencies of more than 95%.
