Abstract:

Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) remains a primary objective for weather researchers and forecasters. The purpose of this research is to present the assessment of the QPE process known as the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor QPE (MRMS QPE) over a region with poor to no radar coverage, such that the reflectivity-rainfall relations are used to derive rain rate amount. Its design uses a combination of individual radar scans, and then merges them into a mosaic. The output of this system is evaluated over a domain that covers the Four Corners region of the United States, which spans over portions of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. The rainfall events for this analysis occur during the seasonal monsoon timeframe. The days consider were August 4, 2016 through August 7, 2016. The QPE precipitation fields evaluated in this analysis will stem from MRMS rainfall products and local rain gauges.
