Abstract:
Steep terrain presents a challenge in soil moisture estimation. In this paper, we illustrate the necessity of polarization orientation angle compensation for soil moisture estimation based on Bragg scattering. We also emphasize the importance of local incidence angle for soil moisture estimation. We found that azimuth slopes cause underestimation, but range slopes can cause over- or underestimated soil moisture depending on range slopes being positive or negative. Theoretically, if both azimuth and range slope measurements are available, soil moisture level can be retrieved precisely. However, to achieve this, a coregistered DEM is indispensable.
