Abstract:
Ensuring reliable operation of the electrical power grid and preventing blackouts require balancing the demands with the proper supply. In this regard, the optimal power flow (OPF) problem is essential to characterize the appropriate dispatch of power systems. Furthermore, in order to increase the stability and the security of the power systems, shunt compensation has been applied to existing power grid. Considering shunt compensation, the OPF problem will contain discrete variables, rendering it very challenging to obtain the optimal solution. In this paper, a novel approach for addressing the OPF problem considering shunt compensation (OPF-SHC) is proposed. The proposed approach can obtain a solution which is very close to the optimal solution efficiently. Finally, simulations on IEEE 5, 9, 14 and 30 bus systems validate the performance of the proposed approach.
