Abstract:
It is now well established that flexible loads such as grid-interactive water heaters, air conditioners, and refrigerators, can provide demand-supply balancing and regulation services to the power grid alongside traditional resources. The creation of virtual energy storage (VES) from flexible loads while meeting quality of service guarantees to the consumer is the focus of the emerging science of demand dispatch. This paper concerns the optimal allocation of large aggregations of flexible loads to balance the net-load forecast. The objective function takes into account the needs of a grid operator, the quality of service requirements of loads as well as the dynamics of the load aggregations in the system. It is shown that the optimal solution has special structure which lends itself to distributed control. A primal-dual gradient algorithm to compute the optimal command signal is proposed and analyzed.
