Abstract:
The topic of overhead transmission line parameter estimation has recently been of much interest to power system engineers worldwide. Although a decently large volume of papers on this topic has come out, only a small percentage of them try to simulate real-world scenarios when estimating the line parameters. As a result, the developed algorithms might be of little practical utility. This paper describes a novel approach for single-circuit transmission line parameter estimation based on synchrophasor measurements. Both systematic and random measurement errors are taken into consideration. The technique is verified by numerous simulations built around current and voltage synchrophasor data sourced from phasor measurement units. A general nonuniform transmission line is considered as well. Some encouraging results have been obtained, and possible ways of improving the effectiveness of the algorithm are suggested.
