Abstract:

With the increasing penetration of distributed generations (DGs) in the distribution network, the traditional inverse-time overcurrent protection scheme is difficult to satisfy the requirements of selectivity and quickness because of the randomness and fluctuation of DGs' output. Based on the digital inverse-time overcurrent protection relay, this paper proposed a new protection scheme of inverse-time overcurrent protection whose characteristics could be defined by users. The presented scheme regarded the characteristic constant A and inverse-time type constant B as continuous variables which could be adjusted together with time coefficient and starting current. An optimization model was established to optimize the parameters of digital relays in order to minimize the total action time under the condition of minimum fault current with relevant constrains. Interior-point was applied to solve the model in order to realize the optimal configuration of protection. The scheme ensured the quick act of relays when the fault occurred at the line's outlet and the selectivity and quickness requirements were satisfied. Finally, the protection scheme was validated by simulation examples.
