Abstract:

As we integrate increasing amounts of distributed energy resources (DERs) into the distribution grid, state estimation plays a crucial role in providing distribution grid situational awareness. In this study, an approximated Distflow formulation is used to incorporate the line losses into a newly proposed approach to distribution system state estimation (DSSE). The newly proposed DSSE approach is compared against existing DSSE approaches on the IEEE-37 node test feeder. All of the approaches are solving a weighted least square problem using the Gauss-Newton method. The newly proposed DSSE model outperforms the DSSE approach without feedback. It provides computational benefits over feedback methods with comparable accuracy. A key insight from this study is the importance of having access to a power flow measurement at the bulk supply point (BSP) of the distribution network segment being analysed.
