Abstract:

The control strategy of the hybrid HVDC system composed of the unidirectional current H-bridge modular multilevel converter (UCH-MMC) and line-commutated converter (LCC) is proposed in this study. UCH-MMC has the ability of clearing short-circuit fault current and outputting bidirectional dc voltage like FB-MMC, while its device cost is close to HBMMC. Based on the principle of UCH-MMC and LCC, the control strategy of start-up and normal operation is proposed. The capacitor of UCH-MMC can be charged through either ac side or dc side. The methods of reversing power transmission and clearing dc side short-circuit fault are presented. The feasibility of the proposed control strategy is verified using the simulation results.
