Abstract:

The proposed work is an effort towards a reliable and effective power flow controller in AC transmission and distribution-network to utilize the full potential of a line (bound by its thermal limits) to contribute in power flow. This work improves the multi-winding transformer-based power flow controller by incorporating asymmetric voltage-ratio of the tap-changer windings to make it more compact with higher flexibility to control power-flow by providing several times higher resolution with limited number of switches and reduced amount of copper and iron volume compared to existing stateof-the-art technology established on multi-winding transformer-based power-flow controller. When compared with voltage-source-inverter based power-flow controller, this solution offers more reliability and lower implementation cost. The controller has been simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK for generating voltage-vectors and results are validated using a hardware prototype developed in the laboratory.
