Abstract:

This paper presents the design considerations of outer-rotor flux-modulated permanent-magnet (OR-FMPM) in-wheel motors applied to light electric vehicles (EVs). The basic wheel model and drive system specifications are considered in the motor design, with utility of the flat-wire armature windings. The multi-step motor optimization focusing on the outer-rotor PM machines is carried out to reach the design objectives of the drive system, with auxiliary of the sensitivity analysis to lower the computing burden. Finally, the motor electromagnetic performances are specifically analyzed, verifying the feasibility of the motor design in the application of in-wheel motors.
