Abstract:

Responsive control strategies have been developed in many traffic signal control systems. This study follows the basic strategy development process and combines the feedback control idea with intersection signal control. The control object characters are analyzed firstly by qualitative activity survey. Then intersection operation parameters are classified clearly according to above character analysis and feedback control requirement. The intersection responsive control problem is summed up for further control algorithm development. In the feedback control laws development, reserve capacity and degree of saturation tracking errors are used in the short-term control loop, and a linear programming (LP) is resolved therein. Field applications of the developed feedback control strategy show that intersection average delay decreases 13.2% and maximum queue length shortens 100 meters in rush hours
