Abstract:
Transit signal priority (TSP) is a novel technology solution that can improve traditional transit services. Here, we discuss a new de-centralized TSP system based on a Nash bargaining solution, with a variable phasing sequence and free cycle length to generate an optimal control strategy (DNBTSP controller). This system was implemented and evaluated in the INTEGRATION microscopic traffic assignment and simulation software and was compared to an optimum fixed time plan controller, a centralized adaptive phase split controller, a decentralized phase split and cycle length controller, and a de-centralized Nash bargaining (DNB) controller with no TSP logic to evaluate the novel controller's performance. The developed DNB-TSP system was applied to find an optimal control strategy for an isolated intersection and for an arterial corridor. Findings revealed that the DNB-TSP system produces significantly enhanced passenger and transit vehicle performance compared to other controllers on an isolated intersection and arterial network.
