Abstract:
Security in Wireless Sensor Networks and Internet of Things Systems is a major concern for the scientific community. A plethora of wireless attacks have made these systems vulnerable to malicious devices and software. Internet of things devices are often an easy target for attacks, due to their low power and low computational power characteristics. Recently, research has led to a number of security mechanisms to prevent attacks. A well-known attack is the Distributed Denial of Service. During this attack, a network is overloaded and as a consequence it operates poorly if not at all. In this paper, we address the identification of such an attack by investigating the Packet Reception Ratio. We propose a rate monitoring algorithm which examines the rates of the incoming traffic from connected nodes, in order to blacklist the ones that have increased rates due to malicious behavior. We consider a wireless road network where vehicles get information from wireless stations that reside on traffic lights, to perform a task. We apply our approach to such a road network which allows us to monitor certain parameters in order to validate it.
