The background to the development of the North American Presentation Level Protocol standard for videotex is presented along with a perspective view of the future avenues of research and development. This is discussed in the context of the new emerging electronic publishing media. The flexibility of the North American Presentation Level Protocol standard is discussed and it is shown how this can form the basis for an information marketplace.
