I was perplexed by “Blockchain’s Carbon and Environmental Footprints”5 in the “Computing’s Economics” column in the August 2022 issue of Computer. The article considered the comparative energy costs of mining Bitcoin against the energy costs of existing banking technology but did not consider the other side—comparative benefits.
