Abstract:

In chapter 2 of this series, I described how I employed session initiation protocol (SIP) phones as doorbells in my Boston, Massachusetts, home to ring the phones at our second home in Las Vegas, Nevada, thereby enabling us to answer the door remotely. A remote doorbell is important to us, as we may be away for extended periods. However, the reliability of my remote doorbell application is only as effective as a reliable Internet Protocol (IP) pathway, which in turn is dependent upon a transmission pathway supported by reliable network elements inside and outside my homes. Documented in this article is how I met the challenge of maintaining reliability by creative systems integration using mainly off-the-shelf subsystems.
