Abstract:
In the not too distant past, photochemistry was the underlying technology for photography and vinyl records were the primary means of selling music. In both these historical examples, the leading firms at the time are no longer the major players. Their business was disrupted by digital imaging for photography and initially magnetic and optical media for music, followed most recently by à la carte downloads from the cloud. In successive columns, we will explore emerging technologies that have the potential to disrupt business as usual and consider some of the impacts upon existing stakeholders. Without a perfectly clear crystal ball, no doubt some of my pontifications will be proven wrong, but hopefully, they will give you food for thought, and I hope many of you will comment by email with something to contribute.
