In this December 2024 issue of the IEEE Communications Standards Magazine, I would like to explore a topic that is gaining growing popularity in academic, industrial and governmental research: intelligent communication. In the ever-evolving landscape of communication technologies, we stand on the brink of a paradigm shift that promises to redefine the user experience. The fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) with wired and wireless communication technologies is giving rise to what can only be described as intelligent communications - systems that will not merely enable devices to communicate but enable them to sense the environment around them, autonomously self-organize, reason, and act in response to achieve a given goal. This emerging era is marked by contextual awareness, where networks of devices seamlessly interact to deliver real-time, adaptive solutions tailored to individual needs. As we journey toward this reality, it's important to explore how AI-driven communications can transform our daily lives by providing rich, context-based experiences and anticipatory services.
