Abstract:

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) based microfluidic device for human blood plasma separation has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The microchannel consists of a constriction-expansion section and a bifurcation channel. The effect of constriction-expansion transition on the blood separation has been investigated with and without SAW. An acoustic power of 20.43 dBm is found enough for plasma isolation from 50× diluted human blood at a flow rate of 0.006μL/min. Higher acoustic power is required for the blood separation at higher flow rate. A diagram of combined working conditions is obtained for guiding the successful blood/plasma separation in the microfluidic chip of given design.
