Abstract:

We present the design, simulation and experimental analysis of a miniaturized device that can generate multiple circulated jet flows by actuation of a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) diaphragm and develop an angular rate sensor. The flows in the device were studied using three-dimensional transient numerical simulation with the programmable open source OpenFOAM and was verified by the experimental result. Each flow is sensed by two hotwires mounted at two positions inside each consisting chamber. The experiment confirmed that the flow was successfully created, and it demonstrated good agreement with the simulation. Moreover, the experiment proves the device can be used as a microfluidic gyroscope to detect angular rate due to the deflection of flow occurred when device is applied with rotation speeds.
