With the emergence of NETCONF, it is expected that a separate effort to study NETCONF-based data modeling for the sake of network management should be undertaken. This paper first tries to establish a common framework for evaluation to measure the capabilities of management data modeling languages. And it aims in utilizing the proposed framework to the case of NETCONF-based network management, by examining not only existing languages but also XML Schema, which seems quite promising as a NETCONF-based data modeling language.
