Abstract:

We present the design of a non-planar UHF RFID tag embedded in a golf ball for tracking purposes. We discuss how our design minimally impacts the weight and functionality of the ball. We also demonstrate how a 3D printed mask facilitates rapid prototyping and is amenable to large-scale manufacturing. The tag prototype is shown to perform reliably over a distance of 0.8 m in real world conditions and exhibits a maximum gain of 1.5 dB. Lessons learned and future research directions are also discussed.
