Abstract:
This paper presents an innovative powered ankle-foot prosthesis with a compact parallel spring mechanism. The parallel spring mechanism consisting a cam and two linear springs are used to reduce the power and torque requirement of actuators, while improving the system energy efficiency. Herein, the cam profile is designed to generate desired spring torque rather than the stroke versus angle curve. In that case, the spring can reproduce human ankle controlled dorsiflexion stiffness. Finally, for evaluating the proposed prosthesis, clinical trials on a below knee amputee are conducted. The experimental results show that the performances of prosthesis are similar to the normal gait.
