Abstract:

Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is a very effective treatment for head and neck cancer, but it can cause severe acute toxicity; therefore, home patients undergoing CCRT have to be continuously monitored. To this purpose, we already developed a mobile application (app), addressed to patients, whose configuration concerning the data to be monitored can be decided by the oncologists in order to meet the specific patients' needs. The app regularly sends data to the hospital server for monitoring purposes, where they are visualized by the staff to undertake the required actions. In this paper, we propose to add a guideline-based decision support system to the architecture and we explain its components from a technical point of view. This system is able to help doctors with the app configuration and, more in general, with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CCRT side effects.
