Abstract:
Matrix converters are AC/AC power converters that provide sine-in and sine-out voltage and currents with bidirectional power flow. Since they lack the need of reactive energy storage elements, like bulky DC-bus capacitors, it is possible to obtain high power/volumes ratios, making them fit and appealing for integrating them inside motor housings. Matrix converters, however, present some drawbacks: more switching elements are needed for its operations, as well as information about their current state. This paper deals with the design, the realization and the testing of an intelligent gate driver unit, whose capabilities are not confined to controlling and protecting the switching elements, but also extend to providing all the necessary measurements to the drive controller, without the need of additional external equipment.
