Abstract:
For the unobtrusive monitoring of sodium and potassium ions, an electrochemical epidermal patch based on Au nanoparticles and a siloxene-functionalized laser-ablated graphene electrode has been developed. The siloxene sheets coated on the working electrodes significantly increase the contact area due to their laminar structure. Furthermore, the electrodeposited Au nanoparticles further increase the overall surface area of the solid contact material resulting in enhanced electric double-layer capacitance at the interface between the ion-selective membranes and solid-state contacts, thereby facilitating ion-to-electron transduction by its' inherent excellent electrical conductivity, ultimately leading to improved sodium and potassium ion detection stability with a Nernstian sensitivity of 59.667 and 58.490 mV/decade for Na+ and K+ towards wide concentration ranges of 0.5-636.5 mM and 0.1-156.6 mM respectively. Ion-selective sensors have also been effectively used in both artificial and human sweat. The combination of Au nanoparticles and siloxene enhances the detection sensitivity of sodium and potassium ions, opening up several opportunities for related self-health monitoring.
