Abstract:

Accurate environmental perception is essential for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Vision-based sensors underperform in bad weather, while radar, which performs well in adverse weather, can be affected by spray over its radome, reducing detection capabilities. Simulations reduce real-world validation efforts but must match real scenarios, necessitating validation. Current ADAS simulation software lacks realistic radar models due to computational challenges. This paper measures radar performance with water spray and saline solution, proposing an attenuation model. Results show a significant performance deterioration, emphasizing the need for accurate environmental modeling and simulation. The physically presented model matches the reality adequately.
