Abstract:

This paper explores a new application of our existing tethered ventilator-carrying robot, demonstrating its effectiveness in providing round-the-clock mechanical ventilator support to pediatric patients in need of respiratory assistance. The robot employs person-following algorithms, integrating inputs from obstacle detection sensors and a purpose-built tether sensor. The tether sensor plays multiple roles and is pivotal for the person-following functionality. It provides critical data on the robot’s relative state with respect to the child. It also imparts to the child a sense of security and companionship by simulating a connection to a leashed pet. The development of the robot underwent rigorous design processes, and its performance was extensively tested across various indoor and outdoor environments, encompassing diverse obstacles in real-life scenarios. The outcomes of these tests underscore the robot’s potential to significantly enhance the quality of life for paediatric patients, necessitating continuous ventilation support. The evaluation results validate the robot’s effectiveness and advocate for further exploration of innovative solutions to support daily activities among this demographic.
