Abstract:

Loss of system integrity is a critical situation where the electric utility ceases to have control over the level of frequency and voltage in the sub-networks (which is also termed as system islands). In the smart grid environment, operation statuses are timely exposed leveraging SCADA and WAM systems. However, in facing with large amount of data and information, it is challenging for system operators to be aware of island formation in a very short period of time. This paper develops a forecasting method which can enable system operators to catch a sight of island formation in the early stage so as to facilitate decision making and countermeasures being taken afterwards. Case studies based on New England 39-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in forecasting uncontrolled network separation.
