Abstract:

For any customer-facing employee working from home, the only reliable and guaranteed media path for a customer business call has been a landline and, in some cases, a mobile phone to carry the voice media. Phone and video calls over a home ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) internet link can sometimes provide a high-quality user experience, but once the internet connection is put under any pressure by the user transferring files or accessing a bandwidth-hungry application, the call may become inaudible. Within an enterprise's office location this issue is resolved with adequate bandwidth but, more importantly, by voice and video communication receiving the highest priority when traversing the enterprise's Wide Area Network (WAN) network. Software Defined - Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) achieves this by applying policy rules to WAN traffic regardless of the transport method. This research tests the hypothesis that an SD-WAN solution can ensure business quality voice over IP (VoIP) communications for home workers. SD-WAN enabled on an edge device within a user's home internet service will have the potential to transform homeworkers and the user's voice and video communication experience. This will open up many opportunities to businesses and their home-based staff.
