Abstract:

As wireless networks continue to evolve as technology improves, it is vital to ensure that telecommunications networks are secure. One of the most common attacks that target wireless networks is Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks due to botnets. Therefore, it is important to detect and mitigate DDoS attacks to avoid the compromise of many telecommunications networks. In this paper, we propose a system level approach to detect DDoS attacks on any network entity and on any interface. A logical function called DDoS Attack Detection and Prediction Function (DADPF) is proposed in this paper. DAPDF can have instances running at any level in the hierarchy of the wireless network. DADPF can use Density Based Clustering kind of techniques to detect and predict DDoS attacks. In this paper, we describe DADPF in detail and show how it can be used effectively in current and future telecommunications networks to counter the threat of DDoS attacks at any given level in the hierarchy of the network. Although the paper talks about wireless networks, the concept can also be used in enterprise networks and DAPDF can be hosted on any data-center.
