Abstract:

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones are used to collect images covering an agricultural area in order to check on the condition of the crop. While the drone is hovering at a high altitude, the spatial resolution of the images becomes lower and the distance traveled to cover the whole farm is reduced, and when the drone is hovering at a low altitude, the spatial resolution of the images becomes higher and the distance traveled will be longer. Our goal is to find the appropriate altitude range for the drone to cover a farm of known length and width with image resolution and traveled distance constraints. The proposed approach considers the drone's power consumption, image resolution, and the area of interest. The optimal altitude range is determined by analyzing the trade-off between the drone's power consumption and image resolution. This research provides a valuable tool for agricultural research to optimize the drone operations in order to maximize the crop yield.
