The promising coding efficiency enhancement of the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) over the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) comes with a sharp increase in the encoder complexity. The additional complexity implies a real constraint related to its industrial implementation. Recently, several acceleration methods for VVC have been proposed. Yet, a deeper understanding of the VVC complexity, mainly related to the new encoding tools, is helpful to design efficient new acceleration methods. To this end, statistical analysis were conducted, focusing on the Multiple Transform Selection concept.
