Abstract:

The modern world with its rapidly growing complexity has a lack of suitable tools to enable appropriate management of complex systems. This paper presents an innovative and needed approach to managing tools dynamically, given that there is now far greater complexity within systems than in the past. The concept of the dynamic evolving toolbox rests on the assumption that not only is a wide variety of tools and techniques needed to address complex systems. The toolbox for complex systems should also not be a static collection of tools but rather an evolving and self-organizing assortment. There is still a tendency to use static approaches suited to less complex systems and to limit tools to the few expert approaches typically used in dealing with traditional systems. What is needed instead is an evolving arsenal of tools that can cope with the variety presenting itself within complex systems, which the focus of this paper. Today’s toolbox for managing complex systems needs to contain a wide variety of tools that are themselves constantly evolving. The paper discusses limitations in the current set of tools and offers desired features for a new evolving toolbox.
