Abstract:

Smart Metering with Power Quality (PQ) monitoring have become an immediate need for continuous and reliable operation of smart grids. The existing PQ monitoring systems require a dedicated acquisition device and is not for real time monitoring of individual domestic loads. Internet of Things (IoT) provide a ubiquitous network for PQ monitoring in order to monitor PQ parameters from each consumer endpoint. A novel low cost IoT based smart meter for measuring and analyzing PQ parameters is presented in this paper. This IoT based smart meter is built using flexible microcontroller which uses IEEE standard 1459–2010 to process voltage and current signals. Additionally, it consists of wireless communication feature to communicate to IoT cloud platform and store the measured PQ parameters, where these parameters are processed and analyzed. PQ issues not only damages the device but also wastes the energy, and hence this analysis would help in saving energy. The proposed IoT based smart meter allows the utilities to understand individual consumer's power consumption patterns and help in forecasting the upcoming demand of electricity more precisely.
