Abstract:
This article describes a 64 \times 64 pixel image sensor with gain-configurable photodiodes and combined subrange (SR) method. A 136-dB optical dynamic range (DR) is obtained by switching the sensor between low-gain (LG) and high-gain (HG) modes for high-light intensity and low-light intensity environment, respectively. A method combining SR technique and single-slope analog-to-digital converter (SS-ADC) circuit is proposed. Based on this method, the sensor can simultaneously image in 3-D (20 m at the light environment of 15.8 klux) and 2-D. In addition, the sensor is compact and omits the time-to-digital converter (TDC) for distance detection. With 64 I/Os operating at 500 MHz, a frame rate of 58 frames/s can be attained.
