Abstract:
This paper describes the miniaturization process for the branch-line coupler operating in the microwave band. This device is widely used in various fields of radioelectronics due to its useful properties. However this device turns out to be too big at low frequencies, that is why it is necessary to reduce its sizes with the preservation of its characteristics at the level equal to the coupler of standard sizes. This study deals with the approach based on the replacement of quarter-wave sections with a line consisting of a folded inductor represented by the meander and a flat capacitor connected to it. This replacement allow us to obtain a compact device with technologically realizable sizes. With the use of the electrodynamic simulation program we created a model of the suggested coupler, and then produced a prototype based on the obtained results. Experimental results match the simulation results, but with a minor error. Thus, with the use of this approach we managed to reduce the sizes of the standard coupler by 70% with the 18% reduction of the working band.
