Abstract:
New generations of disruptive technologies are impacting most areas in the scientific and technological fields, yielding new outputs, opportunities and revealing new avenues of investigation at an unprecedented rate. These technologies open new opportunities in tourism, digital tourism and advertisement of natural touristic regions, to increase the popularity, footfall and visitor numbers of such regions, resulting in increased economic activity in the regions. This work will focus on an applied application of both Drone technologies, 3D printing systems and augmented reality applications, for improved economic output of a region. This paper will outline the work undertaken as part of a project to investigate the potential for such technologies to be applied in the Skellig Kerry region of Southern Ireland, investigating non-urban based augmented tourism applications. This paper will outline concept, region in question, initial testing work completed to date and the proposed path of future work, of this project, with the goal of enhancing the Digital Tourism potential for the region in question, as a means to increase local economic activity and resist depopulation.
