Abstract:

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) safety communication has always been "push"-based. From Day 1 through Day 3, principal messages are always broadcast regardless of the needs, or even the existence, of neighboring vehicles as consumers of the messages. The push-based transmission not only uses the scarce Intelligent Transport System (ITS) bandwidth a few times more than necessary, but also does not fully leverage the capabilities of highly automated vehicles including autonomous vehicles. This paper shows that "pull"-based V2X communication can be an attractive alternative to the conventional push-based paradigm for sensor-rich automated vehicles. With the case of Cooperative Awareness Message (CAM) for Day 1, this paper demonstrates that the pull-based V2X communication can improve both the channel utilization and the awareness of the driving scene compared with the conventional push-based communication.
