Abstract:

In this paper, we demonstrate an experimental visible light communication (VLC) transmission compliant with illumination standards consisting of low-cost components. We therefore employ the carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation technique over a low-cost white light emitting diode (LED), and we experimentally investigate the maximum achievable data rate while limiting the illumination level to that of a typical office environment. For a given optical power and using a low-cost silicon PIN photodiode, we achieved a throughput of 184 Mbps with a 16-CAP signal and with a bit error rate (BER) below 0.001. Moreover, those experimental results are compared to a simulation model we developed.
